Powerful dehumidifier! M. Demos #2009-12-28- We have a smaller home with a full basement. This dehumidifier is great at keeping the moisture level down even during the summer months. It works well but is a little noisy. We are very happy with it and would highly recommend it.!
Died in 5 Months JG123 "JG123" #2011-05-24- I bought an Alen MDF3-74 Dehumidifier from HealthEgoods (Through Amazon.com) in March 2010 to dehumidify a basement around 800 sq feet. The product came on time, and worked great for the first summer. Once summer was over (in August 2010) I turned the product off and left it unplugged, as there was no need to have it run during the winter. I turned the dehumidifier on in April, 2011, and I noticed the fan runs, but the compressor fails to run. I contacted Alen, but they told me the product was out of warranty(Which it was) I am truly disappointed to have spent so much money on a product with good reviews, that only lasted five months. I now own a very expensive doorstop.
A lttle noisy but efficient John M. Costa MD #2011-09-18- Well, in spite of having to return the first unit due to not working, I still give 5 stars to the Alen Star 74 Pint Dehumidifier. The first unit received, right from the start, made noise for 1-2 minutes and then would shut down. No fan working and no water in the bucket. After I contacted the Alen Company via Amazon.com, I was contacted by telephone by the Company and immediatly it was said to me that my unit would be picked up by UPS and a new unit would be send to me. That is exactly how the substitution was done. No problem, and no "Mary go around".
The second unit received started working as soon as it was connected to power and has been working since, very well and very efficiently for 2 weeks. Although it depends of the environment percentage of humidity in each particular case, in my situation it filled its bucket of about 2 gallons in less than 9 hours on the first day . A little noisy specially at turbo mode, but works very well what does not matter in my situation, which is basement dehumidification.
Two negative points: First, the hose adapter comes without the 2 screws for to attach it to the unit, in case you decide to connect a hose instead of having to carry the reservoir every so often. Second, In case you need, there is no means of communication with the Company in the Owner's Manual: not even a telephone number.
Note: The selection of the percentage of humidity works only in Normal mode, not in Turbo.
Esthetically, it is pleasant to look at, and the Control Panel is electronic.
Over all, is an excellent dehumidifier and I am very pleased with it.
Yes, I would strongly reccomend the Alen Energy Star 74 Pint Dehumidifier.
Very Effective Dehumidifier softchewy "softchewy #2011-09-08- I have this dehumidifier along with a GE ADER65LN in my basement. Both have worked very well.
I have had the Alen for a couple of months and the GE for a year. both purchased through Amazon (GE - ABT Electronics and the Alen - from Alen)
The Alen has a larger capacity bucket and can remove more moisture than the GE from the area over the same time period.
Both offer a continuous draining so you don't need to empty a bucket. I have not used this feature yet on either so I can't comment on how well it works.
The Alen has 2 fan speed (regular and turbo) where the GE has 3 speeds (high, medium, low). Noise level is about the same for both units (52-55 dB) so neither is overly quiet or overly loud.
No problems with either unit so far and I would recommend both.
